I use the Lexar Professional Workflow Hub which works a treat with Lexar folding, they aren't being made any more, but are still available. It's modular, so you can add the readers you need. All of this runs into my Macbook Pro via a single port.
I've found that since using the XQD and a faster SD card in the second slot which requires yet another adapter, I haven't been able to back up my images while travelling, which always worries me incase some thing happens and I lose all the photos I had taken. Previously I just back up my day's images onto my iPad using a lightening.
I'm a Mac user. But don't have a MacBook to carry around. PC user I usually just copy them off to the laptop. Ultimately, you could use the USB cable and transfer from the camera to the laptop via USB and suppose you could use SnapBridge if you brought your battery chargers to upload to the cloud Thanks, Lance. That is a possible solution but won't help if the camera is lost in which case both the XQD and the backup SD would be gone. I use SnapBridge to upload to my phone Andriod and from there to my Dropbox account but it really eats up the camera battery and is a pain to connect.
You could also upload directly to Flickr that way to a private album but that would be no good for raw files. Thanks for the suggestion, Cube Ace. Yes it's a problem for me because I shoot in raw. Then depending on what you use to upload to the net, it could be a problem as you will need something that can handle raw files in the operating system of whatever device you use. If the device can't recognize the file it can't easily be transferred.
Another option would be to double up on SD cards and do transfer copies, in camera, to multiple cards. Yes that is an option. If you want to go to the trouble of transferring to a portable USB device, I certainly would not limit myself to gb given how cheap they are. But I personally would just buy more SD cards and keep them separate from your camera and bag until you get back to base. I agree the additional SD card seems simpler but it means taking it out every night and replacing it with a new one if I were to keep the two separate.
A 3 week trip could get expensive in terms of additional SD cards, not to mention a bagful of cards vs a 40gram storage device. Of course I could also download selective images from the SD card onto my ipad but my ipad is getting old and slow and takes forever to download a 32gb card even when it's not full and I'm just downloading selective images.
A gb portable storage will give me space for 8 cards, which is plenty even for a three week trip. Just sayin', if you want the storage device you should go for it, but for the price and same foot print, consider at least doubling the space. The more I have the , the more I fool around with Video as well. You wont regret getting more space.
